What I do:
I am an on-site Contract Recruiter, in the Orange County/San Diego area. This means that I work on-site at companies that need hiring assistance. I am not hired as an employee, but rather as a contractor, who works for an agreed amount of time and at an agreed hourly amount. Sometimes including a hiring bonus per hire. I also usually get an email with your company domain, as to appear working for the company so the candidates feel they are working with the company directly. Your IT dept sets up the email in my Outlook and I VPN into the system when I am away from the office so I can manage resumes, schedules and do the work offsite. What ever it takes to get the candidate pipeline managed.

Why Companies hire me:
Most companies ask me to help them because they have key positions that need to be filled. Either their HR department doesn’t have the bandwidth to take on all the open requirements. So they decide to hire someone on a contact basis to fill key positions and take over some of the reqs. The company gets the luxury of hiring a staffing manager onsite that will work with their Hiring Managers directly without bringing on the individual on as a fulltime basis. The company has the option to end the contract when the positions are filled and or the HR department does not need a fulltime dedicated recruiter. The funds that go to pay the contractor comes out of different funds from the companies salaried employees with reported headcounts and with full benefits.

There are several reasons why a company would hire a contract recruiter. It saves on Headhunting fees and it brings someone in-house to work directly with your hiring managers, schedule interviews, be a representative of the company without being a fulltime employee. Sometimes a company is ramping up and needs to hire people at a fast pace. Adding me to the exists in HR team for a 6 month period allows for that ramp up to reach it’s hiring goals. Often the need is surged because new business is won and the company needs new employees to support the business.  Usually a company hires me because they have very specific technical or top level hiring needs and don’t have the bandwidth to do it themselves. They appreciate someone like me who thrives on learning new technologies and being an evangelistic person for the company and talk to and reach out to the top level of the technology niche you are in. I will go after very specific skills and backgrounds that are not easy to find and present them to you.  Weather it be to build a great team or to attract a few top key players from your competitors to gain a competitive business edge.

Companies want someone with my expertise because I can help them find the people they need quickly and save their managers time. I know where to look for top candidates and I can concentrate on the hiring process, which is often time consuming. Plus, I can shield the managers so they aren’t distracted by outside calls or paperwork, and they don’t have to take time away from their normal responsibilities.

Who I Support

The President, V.P. of Engineering, V.P. of Marketing, V.P.’s and Managers of Software and Hardware Engineering, Optical Engineering, Operations, Manufacturing and the Financial Controller to build each group and staff the company.

Savings I offer being a contract recruiter:
Also, I can save the company money because they don’t have to pay agency fees, unless they want to.  I will take on headhunting searches for hard to find searches or individual key requisitions. I take on a few select searches. Normally agency fees are between 15% and 30% of a new employee’s yearly salary. So if a company hires a new employee from an agency, and pays him/her $90,000 a year, the agency will charge the company from $13,500 to $27,000. If the company needs to hire 10 new employees, it can be very expensive to rely on agencies to find people.

What I get out of Contract Recruiting:

I get to make the pitch about the company from the heart, from the company, from the core. I get to know about the sizzle in your technology and talk about it to candidates. I like to breathe enthusiasm for a company and their technology, culture, mission and growth to top talent. I like being part of the company and partnering with top level people and strategizing on what companies to get people from, what skill sets to go after, what geographic region you want to target, what ever the strategy is, I like to be part of it and to drive great people through a great company.  I find I get to work with exception people, creative people, engineers that are very straight forward, linear, and logical. I like being part of the team rather than the outsider. It also allows me to have an income that I can make an estimate budget and have a steady regular income coming in rather than only having contingency fee’s.

Advantage of being on-site:
Working on-site allows me to develop a stronger relationship with the hiring managers. It gives me a chance to fully understand what they need and to react quickly when they are interested in a candidate. In addition, they know where to find me when they have questions or want to make changes in the job description. I find hallway meetings in passing greatly pushes workflow forward.  Sometimes a brief conversation in-between meetings for a hiring manager is all I need to take the next step in a candidates process. For example, resume review turns into a phone meeting to be scheduled. Or a close out request when a phone screen doesn’t move to the next step. I like being part of the company strongly in the beginning to learn the culture and develop the relationships with the hiring manager. I like to have an office or cube that isn’t too close to regular employees, as I ask questions about salary expectations and talk in figures that in most cases aren’t good for regular employees to hear. When I need to focus heads down and source and recruit, I like to be able to have a quiet place and focused place to work. Sometimes that is from my home office. I find after working onsite, I sometimes get interrupted when I am in full talking on the phone and sourcing mode. When recruiting for a company, I take my notebook to work and then home. I VPN and check email, route resumes when I get them off to the hiring mgrs for review.  I often talk to top level passive candidates off their regular work hours and therefore I bring the work home. I sometimes needs to talk to someone at 7pm at night about a top level job at your company. I do what it takes to attract, ask deep questions to drill down on the fit or not and to attract the top talent to your company. I am a dedicated recruiter when I am a contract recruiter and partner to your company in growing your team with exception people.

Departments I have worked with:
When I started at a Global IT British Staffing Firm in Silicon Valley back in 1998 I concentrated on technical IT and software positions and partnered up with IT Directors in the Bay Area for nearly 3 years to provide their contract and direct hire IT and programming needs. I have always considered myself a Technical Recruiter. However, as I started working with start-up companies at the latter part of 2000, I was asked to work with other departments. Some of the departments include Finance, Marketing, Sales, Technical Support, Software, Executive C Level, Operations, Manufacturing, and General & Administration.

I don’t think there is a Department I haven’t worked with. So while I am still a Technical Recruiter, I also pride myself on being well versed in all departments and don’t feel there is a department I can’t support effectively.
